B2B go-to-market consultant: make the buying process visible

A guide for B2B founders choosing GTM help when multiple stakeholders, long sales cycles and weak internal proof slow deals.

The short answer

A B2B GTM consultant should map the buying group, choose a narrow initial use case, build a defensible business argument and set tests that measure opportunity progression. Lead count alone is insufficient.

Draw the decision, not only the funnel

A CRM stage says where a deal sits, but often hides who has to approve it. Choose five recent opportunities and list the user, budget owner, technical reviewer, procurement or compliance participant and internal advocate. Mark who appeared at each stage and which question they needed answered. This can show why an apparent champion did not have enough material to move the deal.

If a team cannot answer these questions, start with interviews and deal review before commissioning campaigns. The B2B pipeline diagnostic gives a stage-by-stage way to find the constraint.

Choose a use case that can win

A technical product may solve six problems, but each one may have a different buyer and approval route. Pick an initial use case by urgency, repeatability, commercial value and your ability to prove it. Write one clear promise and list the evidence behind it. Keep secondary uses available without making the first page carry them all.

This was central to Mohit's work at Data Sutram. Alternative data had many applications, but regulated buyers needed a concrete reason and confidence about risk. The Data Sutram case study explains how the use-case choice affected the pipeline narrative.

Give the advocate material they can forward

Prepare a short business case that states the problem, proposed change, expected value, implementation responsibilities, risks and relevant evidence. Answer the questions the second and third stakeholder will ask. Do not make the champion reconstruct your pitch from a call recording. The buyer champion guide provides a format.

Sales and marketing should review the material with actual buyers. A page that wins compliments but does not help internal approval needs revision. Note which objections reflect an unclear message and which reveal a product or process gap.

Measure the motion after contact

Track accepted opportunities, stakeholder engagement, stage time and loss reasons by segment. A consultant should recommend whether to increase demand, change proof, narrow the audience or repair a sales handoff based on those patterns. Agree a review window long enough for the buying cycle; a short traffic spike cannot prove an enterprise GTM system.

Why Mohit writes this: At Data Sutram he ran a lean B2B marketing function and built positioning for complex data sold into financial and government settings. First 10 brings that operating experience to founders who have a promising product but no repeatable buyer argument. The case study describes the result and its limits.

Frequently asked questions

What is different about B2B GTM consulting?

The consultant must account for multiple decision makers, sales handoffs, implementation risk and a longer evidence cycle. Optimizing a landing page alone may not fix the commercial bottleneck.

What should a first project produce?

Expect a selected segment and use case, stakeholder and objection map, buyer-facing proof priorities, channel tests and clear sales-stage measures.

Why Mohit is writing this

At Data Sutram, Mohit worked on an alternative-data story for regulated enterprise buyers. The constraint was not simply generating awareness; an internal buyer needed a use case and evidence that would survive compliance review.
