How to leave a marketing agency without losing what it learned

A founder’s agency exit plan covering account access, data, assets, experiments, pending work and ownership of the next decisions.

The short answer

Before an agency engagement ends, collect access, assets, campaign history, test results and unresolved decisions. Assign a new owner for reporting and execution, then verify the handover before switching off the relationship.

Decision framework: Inventory work → Transfer access → Assign ownership.

Treat the exit as an operating handover

A founder can end an agency contract and discover that nobody knows which campaigns were tested, why an audience was excluded or who owns the analytics account. Start the transition before the final week. List every active channel, asset, reporting system, vendor and recurring task. For each, name the company owner and the agency contact who can explain it.

Review the agreement for deliverables, access and notice periods. Do not assume that files, creative rights or platform permissions transfer automatically. Confirm the practical handover with the people doing the work.

Collect the reasoning, not only the files

A folder of ad exports is not a strategy. Ask the agency for a concise experiment log: hypothesis, audience, creative, budget, result, limitations and recommendation. Include tests that failed and why they were stopped. Record changes in tracking or attribution so future teams do not compare incompatible periods.

Ask for a live walkthrough of the campaigns and reporting. Have the new owner explain the current setup back to the agency. That exposes hidden dependencies while the person who knows the history is still available.

Verify access and continuity

Confirm administrative access to ad platforms, analytics, tag managers, website, CRM, design files, landing pages and domains where relevant. Check that the company can add and remove users and that billing will not fail mid-transition. Handle credentials through the platform's proper transfer or permission process; do not circulate passwords in a handover document.

Decide what stays live. Pause or reduce any campaign that lacks a named monitor or response owner. Preserve customer-facing forms, routing and active promises. The agency reporting guide helps identify which numbers the incoming owner should watch.

Give the new team a clear mandate

The replacement may be an in-house marketer, a new agency or a fractional leader. Define the next decisions before assigning production: which audience matters, what the offer is, what channel tests remain valid and how success will be judged. A new vendor given only an old account and a growth target may repeat the same confusion.

Hold a 30-day review after the transfer. Compare performance with the same definitions and note any deliberate changes. Use the transition to improve ownership, not to erase useful history.

Apply this to your business

Create a table with every account, asset and live campaign; its owner; current access; last useful learning; and next decision. Do not finish the transition until every critical row has a company owner who can explain it.

Frequently asked questions

Who should own the ad accounts and analytics?

The company should retain appropriate administrative ownership and access to its accounts and data. Confirm permissions and recovery paths before the engagement ends.

Should campaigns stay live during transition?

Only when someone can monitor spend, performance and responses. Decide campaign by campaign and document the owner for each live commitment.
